Big brown bat

Eptesicus fuscus

Despite its name, this is only a medium-sized bat. It is about 12 cm long with a wingspread of 30 to 33 cm. The fur is rather oily in texture and is a rusty brown colour.  The wing membranes are almost black and have a leathery texture.
This species has become well adapted to human habitation. They are commonly observed at dusk as they fly along lamp-lit streets in pursuit of insects attracted to the lights. During the summer months, they often seek shelter behind loose boards, under eaves or shingles, in attics and church belfries, and so on. Many spend the winter months in caves, sometimes hanging in tightly packed clusters of 100 or more individuals.
These creatures have few natural enemies but are a nuisance to humans in their occupation of buildings, and they are common rabies carriers.
