Felis concolor

Next to the bears, this is the largest, most powerful Canadian predator. Once numerous from the Atlantic to the Pacific, habitat destruction has reduced much of its range. As a result, it is found chiefly in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia and  Alberta.
Large males can measure 2.5 m in total length and may weigh over 90 kg. They prey upon deer, wapiti, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, beaver, snowshoe hares, and even mice. Their preference is for fresh meat, and they rarely scavenge from old kills.
Despite their size, these animals, because of their extreme wariness, are infrequently seen by man in their natural habitat.
