Richardson ground squirrel

Spermophilus richardsonii

This squirrel inhabits the grasslands of the great plains. It can easily be identified by its frequently assumed upright posture and quick, quivering tail which is not long and bushy like that of a tree squirrel.
It lives in burrows and feeds on a wide variety of plants and their seeds. Non-vegetarian fare is not rejected either.
During the winter when the exposed plains turn into a harsh and deadly environment, this plump-bodied little animal hibernates securely in the depth of its burrows.
